In 2006 BYU became the first college to sponsor a semi-professional sports team. With title IX declassifying the men’s soccer team as a D1 sport, BYU chose to pursue a semi-professional route that allowed them to travel internationally and play teams like Cruz Azul, Club America and Pachuca. Additionally it gave players an opportunity to serve abroad and speak about their lives and testimonies.
